After 6 ballots, the Libertarian Party national convention has nominated former Congressman Bob Barr. Barr has turned around on many major issues since leaving congress. He now favors:

– Ending the Iraq War, withdrawal of all American troops from all foreign countries.

– Ending the federal War on Drugs.

– Repealing the Defense of Marriage Amendment, which he had authored.

– Repeal of the PATRIOT Act and Real ID.

[He's still no Ron Paul. –DT]

Bob Barr has a proven track record as a fascist, and the only Libertarian thing he has ever done is just talk. Actions speak louder than words, and once a fascist, always a fascist. I can’t believe you nominated him to represent the LP. A sad, sad day for the LP.

It does seem strange that he is suddenly a civil liberties kind of guy after a career of violating them.

Also note that the LP platform, from which delegates eliminated secession in 2004, has a new plank in 2008:
“3.7. Self-Determination: Whenever any form of government becomes destructive of individual liberty, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to agree to such new governance as to them shall seem most likely to protect their liberty.” Let’s remind the candidates of that frequently.

People really can change. At least I believe so. I think that when people start to benefits of liberty, they start waking up. Time will tell if Barr’s conversion is real or not and based on the discussions I had with him at the national convention I believe he is being sincere.

But it’s up to us as real Libertarian’s to support his campaign. Why? Well because candidates listen to their supporters. I assume that everyone is much more inclined to listen to those that support them than to those that oppose.

There are a lot of Libertarians that came from the Democratic or Republican parties and no body suggests they are fake. I don’t think it’s fair to judge Barr just because he’s high profile.

But if you really doubt his sincerity to Libertarianism, I guess you could donate to local Libertarians that you can trust more, to help elevate their status. (like me? haha)
